Displacement: An exhibition of Visual Art | March 8 - 30, 2008 | 361 Manhattan Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

CPR - Center for Performance Research

CPR – Center for Performance Research is a 3,800 sq. ft. facility on the ground floor of greenbelt, 361 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, dedicated to supporting research and experimentation in contemporary performance. Envisioned as a sustainable permanent space for the arts, CPR is designed to respond to the displacement of local artists in NYC. CPR will be co-owned by Thin Man Dance, Inc. & Chez Bushwick, Inc. Located within the first L.E.E.D. certified performance space in New York City, CPR will bind together a commitment to the sustainability of the arts and the environment.

CPR addresses in a permanent and sustainable manner the need for space for development in contemporary performance. CPR is committed to keeping its operations flexible to respond to the needs of evolving artistic practices. To realize this vision CPR will

  • Provide low cost, quality rehearsal space which accommodates the needs of individual artistic processes including works that require the installation of equipment & design elements
  • Present performances by emerging & established artists
  • Create dialogue surrounding art & ideas as they relate to social culture
  • Provide innovative outreach programs that engage the local community in contemporary art & performance

The themes in Displacement highlight the pressing local issues that motivated greenbelt’s developers from the outset to work with CPR to design and purchase the ground floor of the building at a below-market rate as a way to keep the arts vibrant and alive in Williamsburg and New York City.
